Laminated Bow: Construction, Materials & Benefits

A laminated bow is a bow built from two or more layers of material bonded together to form the limbs or stave. The World Archery Coaching Glossary defines a laminate as "a bow laminated from two or more kinds of wood or other synthetic materials" — distinguishing it from a bow cut from a single piece of solid wood.

How Bow Lamination Works

Bow lamination starts with cutting materials into strips, orienting each strip in a specific direction, then stacking and bonding the layers under pressure. Common core materials include wood, bamboo, and foam, each contributing different mechanical properties to the finished limb. Once cured, the blank is shaped over a form — longbow forms are typically 1½" thick, recurve forms 1¾" to 2" — then sanded and finished. The back (tension side) and belly (compression side) serve functionally distinct roles: laminated construction lets each surface handle its load without the fatigue cracking that affects solid-wood bows.

Materials Used in Laminated Bows

The most common laminated wood bow configuration pairs a wooden core with fiberglass face and back layers. Wood keeps the limb lightweight; fiberglass resists the moisture and temperature changes that cause solid-wood limbs to warp. Entry-level limbs typically combine wood, foam, and fiberglass, while advanced limbs add bamboo and carbon fiber. A fiberglass laminated bow is a practical, cost-effective option for archers still developing strength or changing draw weights. High-end carbon-foam limbs store more energy per unit weight but can introduce more vibration after the shot.

  • Aesthetics: Contrasting material layers create distinctive visual patterns unique to each build.

Where Laminated Bows Fit in Archery

Both recurve and longbow designs rely on lamination today. Traditional builds commonly use wood and fiberglass layers, while Olympic-grade limbs use carbon fiber and carbon foam for maximum performance.
