Arrow Insert

Arrow Insert

An insert is a small piece that is inserted into the end of an arrow shaft. It is typically made of aluminum or brass and serves as a base for the arrow point to screw into. The insert also provides added weight to the arrow, which can help improve its accuracy and stability.

Materials of Arrow Inserts

Arrow inserts are typically made of aluminum or brass. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Aluminum Inserts

Aluminum inserts are lightweight and less expensive than brass inserts. They are also easier to install and remove from the arrow shaft. Aluminum inserts are often used for carbon arrows, which are also lightweight. However, aluminum inserts may not be as durable as brass inserts and may wear out faster with repeated use.

Brass Inserts

Brass inserts are heavier than aluminum inserts and provide better weight distribution, which can improve arrow accuracy. They are also more durable than aluminum inserts and can withstand repeated use. Brass inserts are often used for aluminum arrows, which are also heavier than carbon arrows.

Types of Arrow Inserts

There are different types of arrow inserts available for archery arrows. The most common types are glue-in and screw-in inserts.

Glue-in Inserts

Glue-in inserts are inserted into the arrow shaft with the help of hot melt glue. They are often used for carbon arrows, which have a smaller diameter than aluminum arrows. Glue-in inserts provide a secure bond between the arrow shaft and the insert, which can help prevent the insert from coming loose during shooting. However, they may be more difficult to remove if needed.

Screw-in Inserts

Screw-in inserts are screwed into the arrow shaft. They are often used for aluminum arrows, which have a larger diameter than carbon arrows. Screw-in inserts provide a secure bond between the arrow shaft and the insert and can be easily removed if needed. However, they may not be as secure as glue-in inserts and may loosen over time.

Why Use an Insert?

Using an insert has several benefits for archers, including:

Secure Base for Arrow Point

An insert provides a secure base for the arrow point to screw into, which helps prevent the point from coming loose during shooting. This is important for accuracy and safety.

Added Weight

An insert adds weight to the arrow, which can help improve accuracy and stability. The added weight can also help the arrow penetrate the target more effectively.

Customization

Using an insert allows for customization of the arrow's weight and balance, which can be important for different types of shooting and individual preferences. Archers can choose the type of insert and the weight of the insert to achieve their desired arrow performance.

How to Install an Insert

The steps for installing an insert are as follows:

  • Clean the inside of the arrow shaft and the outside of the insert to ensure a good bond.
  • Apply hot melt glue to the insert (if using glue-in inserts) and insert it into the end of the arrow shaft.
  • Use the insert tool to press the insert down and ensure it is flush with the end of the shaft.
  • Allow the glue to dry completely before adding the arrow point.
