
String creep is permanent, non-recoverable elongation of a bowstring — meaning the string returns to a longer length than it started after being shot. This is distinct from stretch, which is recoverable elongation: the string returns to its original length after each shot. Understanding the difference matters because the fixes are different.
Several factors can trigger bowstring creep:
The primary diagnostic is brace height — the distance from the deepest part of the grip to the string. A drop in brace height is the clearest sign that string creep or settlement has occurred. Measure with a T-square bracing gauge clipped onto the string. Because bowstring creep affects both brace height and nocking point simultaneously, always check both together. New strings settle quickly. Shoot them in immediately or leave the bow strung overnight so the initial elongation stabilizes before you set your brace height.
If brace height has dropped due to string creep, add twists — approximately two twists raises brace height by about ¼ inch. Recheck after each adjustment.
Work on a repeatable anchor point and release. A correct draw length for your body reduces string stress and limits form-based creeping at full draw.
