Carriage Bow: Definition, Uses, and Adaptive Role

A carriage bow is a bow mounted on a stand or carriage that supports and stabilizes the shot. Rather than holding the bow's full weight, the archer uses the carriage as a platform — aiming and releasing normally while the stand bears the load. This setup is used primarily in target shooting and adaptive archery contexts where holding a traditional bow is difficult or impossible.

Who Uses a Carriage Bow?

The carriage bow serves two distinct groups. First, archers managing physical limitations — conditions such as arthritis, injury, or reduced upper-body strength can make holding a bow steady painful or impractical. A bow mounted on a stand reduces physical demand significantly, allowing those archers to continue participating in the sport. Second, recreational and target shooters use carriage bows for the stability benefit: with bow weight removed from the equation, an archer can focus entirely on aim and release consistency.

Advantages of Bow-on-Stand Archery

  • Reduced fatigue: The stand eliminates most muscular effort required to hold the bow steady, which directly reduces shot variation over a long session.
  • Improved accuracy: A stable platform lets the archer concentrate on form and release rather than managing bow weight.
  • Extended participation: Adaptive archery equipment like the carriage bow allows archers with physical limitations to remain active in the sport long-term.

Competition Rules and Governing Bodies

The carriage bow is not standard equipment in mainstream competitive archery. World Archery and the National Field Archery Association do not permit bow-mounted stands in their open competitive events. Within formal para archery, assistive bow-support devices are governed under a separate classification system. Classifiers authorize adaptive equipment based solely on an athlete's documented impairments — not to enhance performance beyond what the impairment requires — and all equipment is inspected during competition.

Carriage Bow in Context

The carriage bow fills a specific role: it is not a competitive alternative to a bow for physical limitations, but a practical tool that extends archery access where a standard setup is no longer viable. If you are exploring adaptive or low-impact archery approaches, understanding your physical needs first shapes every equipment decision that follows.
