
A flight bow is a specialized type of traditional bow designed for one purpose: shooting arrows as far as possible. Unlike target bows built for repeated use across hundreds of arrows, a flight archery bow is refined to its absolute limit — stressed, lightened, and tuned for maximum distance over everything else.
Every element of a flight bow is optimized to maximize arrow speed while reducing weight and drag.
Flight bows are typically shorter than other traditional bows, measuring around 48–54 inches. This compact length reduces overall bow weight without sacrificing limb energy. Common materials include bamboo, yew, carbon fiber, or other lightweight, high-strength combinations — chosen specifically for their ability to store and release energy efficiently.
The limbs of a flight bow are built thin and highly flexible, allowing them to store a large amount of energy at full draw. That stored energy transfers to the arrow at release. Limbs may be constructed from a single material like bamboo or a composite such as wood and carbon fiber.
The bowstring is typically made from high-performance materials like Dyneema or Spectra — chosen for low stretch and minimal creep, which maximizes energy transfer. The arrow rest on a flight archery bow is kept deliberately low-profile to reduce drag and improve arrow exit speed. Options range from a simple leather pad to a more adjustable rest.
When shooting a flight bow, the archer typically stands at a 90-degree angle to the target, holding the bow in the hand farthest from the target. The arrow is nocked, the bow drawn to the archer's appropriate draw length, and then released. Any inconsistency in the release directly affects the arrow's trajectory and final distance.
Release aids — including finger tabs, gloves, or mechanical releases — help archers achieve a repeatable, consistent release.
