Archery Arm Guard: Types, Fit & How It Works

An archery arm guard — also called a bracer — is a protective panel worn on the inside of the bow-arm forearm. It shields skin from the bowstring's snap on release, which can cause stinging, bruises, and welts, and it holds loose sleeves flat against the arm so fabric cannot deflect the string mid-shot. World Archery defines the armguard as "a guard that protects the arm from the bowstring when an arrow is shot."

Types of Arm Guard Archery Shooters Use

Traditional arm guards are cut from leather, wrap around the forearm, and use adjustable straps for a snug fit — a natural choice for traditional archers who prefer classic materials. Modern forearm guards use plastic, neoprene, or silicone in wrist-mounted or full-bracer styles; these are lightweight, flexible, and available in a wide range of colors. Recurve archers almost always need a forearm guard because the string visibly contacts the arm after the shot. Compound shooters vary by individual anatomy and bow setup — on many compound rigs the string path stays farther from the forearm, so a shorter, lower-profile bow arm guard is often sufficient.

Benefits of Wearing an Archery Wrist Guard

  • Protection: Absorbs string impact and prevents painful welts that distract from shooting.
  • Comfort: Reduces shock and vibration, allowing longer sessions without fatigue.
  • Improved technique: Confidence from protection lets you focus on form, reducing flinching and arm tension that undermine accuracy.

How to Fit a Bow Arm Guard Correctly

Measure your forearm circumference just below the elbow and match it to the manufacturer's sizing chart. A guard that is too large slides out of position; one that is too small leaves skin exposed. Place the wider end toward the elbow and the narrower end toward the wrist, on the inner surface of the bow arm. Secure the middle strap first, then the wrist strap, then the elbow strap — no twists, gaps, or folds. Beginners generally benefit from a longer guard that covers more of the forearm; experienced archers often prefer a shorter, lower-profile model. Our full guide to finding the right arm guard breaks down options by shooting style and budget.

An archery arm guard is also a diagnostic tool: if the guard shows repeated string contact in the same spot, check your elbow rotation first. Turning the bow-arm elbow outward and downward moves the forearm naturally clear of the string path — the goal is zero contact with arm or guard. See why archers wear arm guards and how proper elbow rotation works together with the guard. The XT Dynamic Arm Guard is a modern option with adjustable straps and a slim profile suited to both target and field shooting.
