
Hand shock is the sudden vibration or jolt felt in the hand holding the bow after an arrow is released. It can be uncomfortable, cause fatigue over long sessions, and contribute to the bow moving off-target.
Hand shock in archery stems from residual energy remaining in the bow system after the arrow has left the string. No bow is perfectly efficient — even high-end bows convert only a portion of stored energy into arrow speed, leaving the rest to vibrate through the riser and into the archer's hand.
Limb stiffness, limb mass, and riser size all affect how much vibration reaches the bow hand. Limbs that are too stiff or too flexible relative to the draw weight can produce excessive movement at the shot. A larger riser absorbs more residual energy than a smaller one. Brace height also plays a direct role: a higher brace height generally produces less bow hand shock and a more forgiving feel, while a lower brace height increases the power stroke at the cost of added vibration.
Heavier arrows absorb more energy from the bow, reducing the amount transmitted back through the riser. Arrows with a higher spine rating tend to be more stable in flight, which further limits vibration felt in the hand. Using arrows that are badly mismatched to the bow's draw weight can worsen both bow hand shock and accuracy.
Gripping the bow too tightly is one of the most common technique-related causes of handshock. A relaxed, open grip — with pressure sitting in the meat of the thumb rather than across the palm — allows the bow to move naturally at the shot. Proper bow arm alignment also prevents torque, which is a secondary source of vibration.
