Follow the String: Technique, Benefits & How-To

Follow the string is a fundamental archery principle: the archer keeps their bow arm steady and tracks the direction of the bowstring throughout the entire shot — from draw to release and beyond. Done correctly, it keeps the bow arm aligned with the target and prevents the arrow from deviating off its intended path.

Why Following the String Matters

Improved Accuracy

When you follow the string archery technique consistently, the bow arm stays in line with the target through the shot. Even small arm movements at the moment of release can push an arrow off course — especially at longer distances. Keeping the arm driven toward the target reduces that margin of error.

Consistency and Muscle Memory

Repeating the same string follow motion every shot builds muscle memory. This is critical in both competitive shooting and bowhunting, where repeatable mechanics determine whether you hit or miss under pressure.

Energy Efficiency

When the bowstring releases, it transfers energy to the arrow. If the bow arm moves during that transfer, the archer's body absorbs some of that energy instead of the arrow. Proper string follow ensures that energy is directed toward the target, producing a cleaner, more powerful shot.

Injury Prevention

With higher-poundage bows, the bowstring's force can jerk the arm if the archer doesn't maintain position. Following the string keeps the arm steady and in a safe alignment, reducing the risk of strain to the arm or shoulder. See our guide on common archery injuries and how to avoid them for more detail.

How to Follow the String

  • Bow arm position: Keep the bow arm straight, elbow locked, shoulder relaxed. Hold the grip firmly but without over-gripping, which can cause torque.
  • Drawing the string: As you pull back, focus on keeping the bow arm steady and tracking the string's direction toward your anchor point.
  • At full draw: Maintain bow arm alignment while aiming. Avoid any micro-adjustments that shift the arm.
  • Through the release: As the string releases, continue to follow its direction — the bow arm holds its position and the draw hand moves rearward along the face. Avoid flinching or dropping the arm in anticipation of the shot.

Following the string is closely related to follow-through — the continuation of the shooting motion after the arrow leaves the bow. Both principles reinforce the same idea: let the shot finish naturally rather than reacting to it.
